Functional Rehabilitation

What is rehabilitation and how can it differ from standard physiotherapy?

'Physio rehabilitation aims to optimise patient function and well-being, to help integrate the patient back into their chosen lifestyle activities, whether at home, work or leisure’ (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy). This can be essential when individuals have experienced life-changing injuries or ongoing symptoms due to injury, illness or long-term conditions.

Treatments used may overlap with standard physiotherapy but can differ due to the intensity and duration of the rehabilitation programme, due to the multifaceted approach, outcomes focus and monitoring needed. Sessions may take place in a variety of locations to suit the patient’s own needs and may be ongoing for several months or longer. A multi-disciplinary team are often brought together to look after more complex cases.

Previous rehabilitation cases, for client's experiencing longstanding pain, long term conditions or poly trauma (multiple injuries such as fractures and soft tissue injuries) have involved me carrying out a blend of sessions that would best fit the client's needs and rehabilitation goals. This has included assessments being carried out in the clinic or the client's own home with follow up sessions taking place in the pool, the gym or even the park, so that we could tailor exercises to be interest, sport or work specific.

I am able to provide rehabilitation independently or as an Associate Physiotherapist for specialist provider ‘Designed2Move’, where I work with Case Managers, solicitors and specialist physiotherapist’s to ‘deliver bespoke functional programmes with a creative and integrative approach to help people return to work and active lifestyle's’.

As of May 2023 ‘Designed2move’ rehab services became part of Bespoke Wellbeing Ltd.

TESTIMONIALS

"After an operation (the 5th!) on my knee in 2018, I required physiotherapy so approached Liz Hunter Physiotherapy where I was introduced to Sarah Lord. This proved to be a good choice and Sarah gave me exercises and instruction during weekly appointments to improve the strength and mobility of both knees, which also suffer from osteoarthritis.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2019 and continued my appointments with Sarah (in the clinic and the hydrotherapy pool) in order to improve my balance and posture as well as strengthening the knee joints.

If I have to miss a session, it is quite noticeable and I believe that Sarah’s expertise is keeping me mobile.

Sarah has a vast knowledge of her profession which she applies with appropriate challenge but also with empathy and humour . Altogether this enables me to maintain a good standard of mobility and balance thus contributing to enjoying life."

"I came to Sarah in Oct ’22 after 3 months of suffering with disc herniation, nerve root impingement and trochanteric bursitis. I struggled to walk, was in constant pain and was standing at a 45º angle. Sarah assessed me and told me that she could help. Initially, I had treatment every week, quickly moving to fortnightly and then less often, with one of my final sessions taking place in a local gym, which I have continued to attend.

Within weeks I had major improvements and soon Sarah had me walking tall again. I knew that I was in safe hands with Sarah. She encouraged me every step of the way and stayed positive.

In my opinion her skill, knowledge and manner are exceptional! Sarah gave me my life back and I am very grateful...thank you Sarah. If you need help, I’d suggest a consultation with Sarah."
